Well, Mel, if you have a couple of days of spare time, you can use this resource,
RootkitRevealer v1.71, by Bryce Cogswell and Mark Russinovich. It will put you ahead
of at least half of Billy's minions, and way ahead of me. (I would not go here, unless
I suspect a problem. It is not brain surgery--it is much more involved.)
http://technet.
That site will present everything you want to know about rootkits, their origins,
effects, etc., and provides a handy detector. Note that you may "detect" benign
or useful entries, and possibly remove them. So, this is powerful, and a bit dangerous.
Like brain surgery by flashlight, it may be necessary, but should be approached with
caution. It is not in the WFL, but I can be talked into putting it there. Problem is,
"mysterious" items may be found, vexing you unnecessarily.
(That is why I have not used it. I do not suspect a problem.)
As you have done, Mel, I ran Avast!, and have run AVG's old rootkit detector also. I do
not believe that the AVG rootkit detector needs updates to be successful; as, it uses other
methods to find the problems. Further, there are no Definitions files in the Program
Folder. If you wish to go further, Sophos has a free kit, as does
Panda. But, satisfaction seems underwhelming with them, so I would not bother.
So, if you have a good firewall, I think you are all set. Security is largely in the index finger,
anyhow, as you know.

Robert,Your email prompted me to run my avg again. (After having credit card info stolen two separate times at T.J. Max, I should know better.)When I tried to update AVG's rootkit, surprise!, below came up:"Important Notice:As AVG Anti-Rootkit is now only included with commercial versions ofAVG 8.) Updates for AVG Anti-Rootkit Free will no longer be available."I ran the rootkit anyway, but it's value must be diminished. Any otherfreebie sources to double check my Avast ! 4.8 ?As always, thanks for being there.....Mel
". . .This rootkit detector is the one I have used for some time. It is no longer available from AVG; since, they now include it only in a paid suite. But, calling on our secret resources, it is still available here, as I write........ Robert" http://www.brothers
